  • The McKenzietine Strikes Again - UFC on FUEL TV Prelim Results

    By Frank Curreri
    15 May 2012 | 12:00 am
FAIRFAX, VA, May 15 – The Tuesday fight between lightweights Cody McKenzie and Marcus LeVesseur at the Patriot Center lasted three minutes and five seconds. McKenzie maybe won 15 seconds of the action. But it was the 15 seconds that mattered, as The Ultimate Fighter vet survived some heavy leather early before cinching in his signature “McKenzietine” choke that provoked the Levesseur tap out in the first round. Levesseur (21-6) came out winging – but missing – early, yet he started to crack McKenzie from the top position after scoring a takedown. McKenzie (13-2) remained poised,…

FAIRFAX, VA, May 15 – Leading up to their UFC on FUEL TV fight at the Patriot Center, Jeremy Stephens vowed to “break” Donald Cerrone, perceiving that Nate Diaz had done the same last December. But the “old” Cerrone emerged Tuesday night, the one who had annihilated six straight foes before Diaz. And that was bad news for Stephens, who received probably the worst beating of his seven-year career in losing a shutout 30-27 decision in the lightweight scrap. Stephens went the distance, but walked away with a sizable welt under a bloody left eye, and a left leg (his lead leg) that is…

"The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung put on a career best performance tonight in his UFC on Fuel TV 3 main event against Dustin Poirier. Jung was able to come out hard and engage with Poirier on the feet and the floor and Poirier had little in the way of answers. The problems started early for Poirier when he wasn't able to bring his kicks back quickly enough, leading to Jung catching them and getting takedowns in rounds one and two. He worked well from the top and had Poirier bleeding from solid elbow attacks. When Poirier came back a bit in the third, Jung made the right adjustments and by…

  • UFC on Fuel 3 Results: Chan Sung Jung finishes Dustin Poirier in memorable main event

    Jack Burton
    15 May 2012 | 5:15 pm
The UFC decided to give fans a mid-week treat to tantalize their MMA-oriented tastebuds before this weekend’s Strikeforce event in the form of UFC on Fuel 3, a show headlined by a clash between featherweight contenders Dustin Poirier and Chan Sung Jung, and delivered a delicious event in the process. “The Korean Zombie” came away with what would many consider an upset win, finishing Poirier in the fourth round to snap a five-fight winning streak. The stoppage was the latest from Jung who racked up bonus-winning finishes in his last two outings. Other notable match-ups scheduled…
  • Cesar Gracie gives Nick Diaz’s side of the story after last weekend’s BJJ debacle

    Tony Clifton
    15 May 2012 | 3:00 pm
UFC welterweight Nick Diaz is not necessarily the most eloquent individual, often cracking under the pressure of media attention similarly to the way he breaks opponents inside the Octagon. However, coach/mentor Cesar Gracie has no such problem penning a thoughtful statement laced with objectivity, not profanity. Gracie did just that last night regarding Diaz’s decision to no-show a scheduled BJJ superfight with Braulio Estima. And, while the renowned instructor certainly defended Diaz in the public plea, he also made it clear he wasn’t happy with how the 28-year old handled himself…

Featherweight Dustin Poirier will have his hands full tonight when he meets Chan Sung Jung in headlining action at UFC on Fuel 3. However, if he gets by “The Korean Zombie” many feel the 23-year old will solidify a shot at the divisional title. For his own part Poirier has remained noncommittal on his future plans, expressing interest in the belt while also saying he’d like more experience before accepting the challenge of fighting for it. There’s something special about Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal winding up as potentially a champion in both professional wrestling and mixed martial arts at the same time. Being on top of two different avenues is remarkably tough; combining MMA with one that shares historical roots with MMA but lacks the sporting aspect to it will actually be harder than if he were to try another combat sport. Putting on a pro wrestling match is a difficult feat in and of itself; it’s why being successful at both at the same time might be too much for him. • Should Elbows on the Ground Be Illegal in MMA?

    16 May 2012 | 4:15 am
For a while now, certain sections of the MMA community have deemed the use of elbows on a grounded opponent either inconsequential to the outcome of a contest or nothing more than a means of precipitating a premature stoppage, and as such should be made illegal in MMA. I on the other hand beg to differ, and believe elbows should remain an integral part of mixed martial arts. Some of the reasons against elbow use in a ground-and-pound assault is the supposition that it favors the grappler with regard to employing the technique in a negative way, which is assumed to gain an unhealthy advantage…
  • UFC on Fuel 3 Results: Memorable Images and Fighter Quotes from Fairfax

    16 May 2012 | 1:58 am
When we, as MMA fans, commentators and writers see an exciting fight, we often use hyperbole to describe that fight. In the moment, a powerful knockout becomes "one of the greatest ever," a particularly vicious armbar becomes "a submission for the ages," a toe-to-toe slugfest becomes "one of the best fights we have ever seen." Those descriptions sometimes lose something once the adrenaline wears off or we get a chance to view those fights objectively, removed from being caught up in the moment. With that in mind, I can say, with almost 100 percent confidence, that when I look back at the main…
  • Will Donald Cerrone Ever Win UFC Lightweight Championship?

    16 May 2012 | 12:23 am
Donald Cerrone is good. He's really good, in fact.An excellent kickboxer with deceiving strength and wrestling to go along with a polished ground game, Cerrone is one of the more well-rounded fighters one will find in the Octagon. That said, he'll never win the UFC lightweight belt.  The gold just isn't meant for "The Cowboy," I'm afraid. In his recent win over perennial tough guy Jeremy Stephens at UFC on Fuel 3, Cerrone showcased a brilliant variety of strikes en route to his unanimous decision victory.  He was utterly dominant, but let's be real here: It was Jeremy…
