Thomas Gerbasi, UFC - The UFC 59 fight poster read "Reality Check", and for five minutes, it certainly was for Forrest Griffin, who was battered for much of the opening stanza of his 2006 bout on the card by a man who had reigned over the light heavyweight division longer than anyone else in UFC history, Tito Ortiz.

Kos and Effect
19 Nov 2009 | 12:15 pmMike Russell, UFC - If confidence were currency, Josh Koscheck would be Donald Trump and if the 31-year-old's worth is as high as he feels it is, he believes a win over highly-touted knockout artist Anthony "Rumble" Johnson at UFC 106 November 24 could very well outbid all potential UFC welterweight title shot claimants. -

Ready to 'Rumble' II: Josh Koscheck UFC 106 interview exclusive with MMAmania.com
20 Nov 2009 | 12:11 pmJosh Koscheck is a man people love to hate. At this point it's safe to say he's embraced his role as the bad guy and continues to use it to fuel his fire. Baseball Hall-of-Famer Reggie Jackson once said, "Fans don't boo nobodies," and that statement rings true with regards to Koscheck as well. "Kos" is a legitimate top ten welterweight contender and has been for some time. Lately, however, he's been on a bit of a roller coaster going 2 - 2 in his last four fights and alternating wins and losses. Most recently he registered a first round knockout of Frank Trigg at UFC 103. The UFC then… -

16 Nov 2009 | 6:13 pmStory By: King Eddie- MMA Hawaii Staff Reporter As UFC 106 draws closer and closer, the match-up that intrigues Hawaii fight fans seems to be the battle between Kendall Grove and Jake Rosholt. Forrest Griffin: UFC’s cussing, anti-role model
20 Nov 2009 | 2:20 pmTito Ortiz may be a better trash-talker but Forrest Griffin is a better quote. The quotes are rarely about his fighting or career, but they're still classics. This discussion on why he curses so often is dynamite. "I don't know why I cuss so much. I'm around gyms all the time. Damn, dirty apes," Griffin told the gathered media at UFC 106 workout day. He told the scribes that his bad language gave him an idea for his next book: "The preface of my new book is 'My mother told me when I was a kid that cussing is a sign of low intelligence and low vocabulary. UFC 106 interview: Koscheck willing to take risks to get title shot
20 Nov 2009 | 1:15 pmJosh Koscheck is a promoter's dream. He'll fight anyone, anytime, even with less than eight weeks to prepare for a fight. When the UFC needed a major fight to fill the gap left by Brock Lesnar at UFC 106, matchmaker Joe Silva brainstormed and came up with an excellent fight featuring Koscheck against Anthony Johnson. Frankly, Kos should've said no unless he was guaranteed a UFC welterweight title shot with a win. But he didn't do that and he's taking all the risk against a guy who's biggest wins have come against Yoshiyuki Yoshida, Kevin Burns and Luigi Fioravanti. Koscheck (13-4, 11-4 UFC)… -
UFC 106 interview: Baroni will fight anybody
20 Nov 2009 | 12:35 pmIt's been a long road back to the UFC for Phil Baroni. The former light heavyweight is now down at welterweight. He served time for a steroid suspension back in 2007 and fought in organizations like EliteXC, Icon Sport, Cage Rage and Palace Fighting Championship. So when Baroni got an offer to return to the big leagues after five years away, he wasn't about quibble over his opponent. Fellow gym member Amir Sadollah from Xtreme Couture was offered up and Baroni jumped at the chance. "You take what you can get. We're professionals. Fight first, friends later. UFC 106 picks, Vegas-style: The card with the black cloud over it
20 Nov 2009 | 12:00 pmAt this point, the UFC probably just want to gets through UFC 106 without anymore drama or disasters. It's good hardcore fight fans card but certainly lacks the pizzazz it appeared to have when Brock Lesnar versus Shane Carwin was the headliner. Tito Ortiz-Forrest Griffin has been bumped up to fill the hole and it's a pretty intriguing fight from a gambling standpoint. Is Tito healthy physically? And is Griffin healthy mentally? Josh Kosheck and Anthony Johnson stepped up on less than a month's notice to hep the UFC rebuild this card. There's a wild scenario right now at Las Vegas sports… -

HYDEN BLOG: The Matter Of PED Use
19 Nov 2009 | 1:25 pmVisual evidence isn't the sole indicator of PED (Performance-Enhancing Drugs) use. After all, there have been relievers in Major League Baseball that have been busted for PED's. Plenty of athletes use them to recover from injury and fatigue, rather than to gain muscle mass. Of course, being able to get stronger as well as recover quicker is a nice bonus. In almost every sport, added strength is an advantage. I wrote the other day that I believe that Brock Lesnar has used in the past, and is probably still using, PED's. 19 Nov 2009 | 8:40 amBy: Alvin Carter III, MMATorch Specialist What is UFC President Dana White supposed to say about Strikeforce’s Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers event on CBS? His dismissive comments about the “tiny” promotions less than stellar ratings make perfect sense from a business standpoint. Does Microsoft praise Apple when they debut of a new product? Of course they do not. Just because the competition has a far smaller market share does not mean the UFC can sit back and take time to pat Strikeforce on the back. The debut Strikeforce on CBS event had an average of 4 million viewers and peaked…

Every time he has stepped up and fought the true legends of the sports, BJ Penn, Georges St, Pierre and Matt Hughes, he has lost. But I admire him more for that. He is not running on talent alone, but hard work and dedication. I’ve always valued heart over natural talent. As he begins… -

Ready to 'Rumble': Josh Koscheck UFC 106 interview
20 Nov 2009 | 3:14 pmJosh Koscheck is a man people love to hate. At this point it's safe to say he's embraced his role as the bad guy and continues to use it to fuel his fire. Brockwatch: Lesnar Back in Six Months, Says Jiu-Jitsu Coach Who's Not a Doctor
20 Nov 2009 | 10:26 amAccording to Brock Lesnar's jiu-jitsu coach, Rodrigo "Comprido" Medeiros, the big man is healing up after his surgery and will "be fighting again within six months." That means Lesnar-Carwin could take place this spring, and there will be no need for an interim title or any other such nonsense. Great, right? Only maybe we should consider the possibility, however minor, that "Comprido" is substituting blind optimism for medical knowledge. If we can believe what Dana White says, Lesnar had a hole in his intestine that was leaking stuff into his… -
Oh Yeah, This Is Happening
20 Nov 2009 | 9:37 am(Photo by Esther Lin, for Strikeforce.) Kerry Vera and Kim Couture are set to go at it tonight in the Strikeforce Challengers event in Kansas City. Since they both share the names of famous UFC fighters who just faced one another, it probably seemed like a genius idea to Strikeforce. But "Sugar Free" is a Couture in the same way that Ivana is a Trump. When a name helps that much you hang on to it, even if you didn't hang on to the husband. So what do you think, is your interest in this bout harmed by the somewhat disappointing display put on by their male… -
Painkiller Dependency Spurred Karo Parisyan's Latest Fight Withdrawal
20 Nov 2009 | 7:35 am(Melanson and Parisyan, before it all fell apart. Props: elitefts.com) In a new interview with Five Ounces of Pain, Karo Parisyan's longtime friend and training partner Neil Melanson confirmed that Parisyan's latest last-minute fight-cancellation was directly related to the painkiller addiction that has haunted him for years. After Melanson got permission from Karo to go public with the story, he laid it all out: “Karo’s had some problems with an addiction to pain medicine due to an injury he sustained a few years ago. Then when he started having these anxiety problems, it…

WEC 44: Jose Aldo, the New King of the Featherweights
19 Nov 2009 | 8:49 amhere’s a new 145-pound king on the throne, and if his performance at WEC 44 is of any indication, his reign may last quite a while. Taking on incumbent champ Mike Brown, a man who’d defeated superstar Urijah Faber twice and wrecked Leonard Garcia in a title defense, Jose Aldo definitely should have had his work cut out for him. But Aldo, a Nova Unao-trained jiu-jitsu black belt, had the momentum of a string of dominant performances going for him, and that, plus his dangerous striking, unearthly speed and unbridled aggression, made for a featherweight championship match-up that on paper… -
Analyzing how UFC, Tito Ortiz, and Forrest Griffin sell fights
19 Nov 2009 | 3:38 amBefore we get to a transcript below of the UFC 106 Countdown show that aired this week on Spike TV to hype up this Saturday’s fight between Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin, I wanted to point out a few characteristics that each fighter has that makes them superstars in the eyes of fans. They understand the nuances and intricacies that it takes to get people not only interested in them but interested in paying to see their fights. Ortiz, in particularly, really knows how to sell himself and sell his opponent while managing to mock his rivals. The five golden rules that separate Tito and… -

UFC 106: As Dustin Hazelett Hopes Karo Parisyan Gets Help, Dana White Cuts The One-Time Title Contender
19 Nov 2009 | 8:11 pmThe first thing UFC welterweight prospect “McLovin” Dustin Hazelett (11-4) told Fighters.com Thursday evening when I called him for comment on his scheduled UFC 106 opponent “The Heat” Karo Parisyan’s (18-5) apparent withdrawal from their fight due to a recurring anxiety disorder was, “I just hope Karo gets the help he needs.” Before tonight, Parisyan had also pulled out of a matchup versus Fighters.com’s eighth-ranked welterweight “Zenko” Yoshiyuki Yoshida (10-3) at UFC 88 in Atlanta in September 2008 and the whispers about Parisyan’s anxiety… -

18 Nov 2009 | 8:28 pmHeavyweight Brendan Schaub (3-0) knocked out Jon Madsen (1-0) in the second round in an exhibition quarter-final fight on The Ultimate Fighter 10 Wednesday. Fighters.com’s fourth-ranked light heavyweight “Sugar” Rashad Evans (13-1-1) coached both fighters into the semis, and commented after Schaub’s victory, “He put those hands together and…wow! He put him down.” Schaub’s straight right blasted off twice, the first punch causing Madsen to plant his feet and cover his head and the second spinning Madsen to the mat on his stomach. Referee Josh Rosenthal… -
MMA Gospel - After Couture vs. Vera UD at UFC 105, It's Clear MMA Judging is Arbitrary
18 Nov 2009 | 7:30 amAfter watching the main event between “The Natural” Randy Couture (17-10) and “Truth” Brandon Vera (11-4) at UFC 105 in Manchester Saturday, I realized that MMA judging is clearly arbitrary. Randy won a unanimous decision with scores of 29-28, 30-27, and 30-27. This decision, along with the fight between Fighters.com and UFC Light Heavyweight Champion “Dragon” Lyoto Machida (16-0) and third-ranked “Shogun” Mauricio Rua (18-4) made me wonder just what the judges are looking for and scoring during a fight. The criteria for judging a mixed martial… -

The live gate was $8.84 million with 15,470 tickets sold. In comparison, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Juan Manuel Marquez reached 1.05 million buys in September. Bob Arum, promoter of both Pacquiao and Cotto, estimates that Manny Pacquiao made $22 million off of the fight while Cotto pulled in $12 million. Not too shabby. However, the bout scheduled for UFC 106 this Sat. has been removed from the card. WEC 44: Jose Aldo captures featherweight gold, Garcia and McCullough fall again
18 Nov 2009 | 9:34 pmMike Brown entered his third featherweight title defense against the Brazilian featherweight sensation Jose Aldo at WEC 44 in Las Vegas, Nevada earlier this evening, and left the octagon without it after Aldo was pulled away from the helpless champion. The first round featured a display of stand up that leaned in the favor of Aldo. Brown attempted to bring down the challenger, but Aldo’s takedown defense proved too much for the champion, whose wrestling pedigree is hardly anything to scoff at. Round two saw Brown go for another desperate takedown after getting tagged by Aldo. The takedown… -

Matt says he had a little swelling in his brain and a migraine. Coach Wittman calls Matt out. If Matt had any swelling of the brain it would be life-threatening. Wittman is tired of Matt making excuses. The coaches think he is looking for a way out without looking like a wimp. His teammates also seem to…
