  • James Te Huna: Last pick becomes a wanted man

    9 Feb 2010 | 6:01 am
Elliot Worsell, UFC - Rumours were circulating that the UFC had Australia on their mind, and James Te Huna heard them at every corner. He was working as a bricklayer in Sydney at the time and compiling a noteworthy career as a mixed martial artist on the side. A talented fighter with more wins than defeats, Te Huna's biggest opponent to date was a troublesome shoulder injury.

Michael DiSanto, UFC - Late last week, I was talking about UFC 109 to a Silicon Valley venture capitalist, and he said, "I wish Randy Couture would just go away; I'm so over that guy." Interesting. When pressed why, he responded, "Because he beats all of my favorite fighters, and the guy is older than I am!" Fair point.

Thomas Gerbasi, UFC - It was a bout nearly 12 years in the making, and for Randy Couture, it was certainly worth the wait, as he was on point in his UFC 109 main event Saturday night against Mark Coleman from the opening bell until he submitted his fellow Hall of Famer in the second round at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
  • Chael Storm Sonnen Earns Shot at The Belt

    6 Feb 2010 | 9:43 pm
Thomas Gerbasi, UFC - Chael Sonnen is the worst kind of fighter to be in the Octagon with. Not because he will knock you out in 30 seconds or submit you in the same amount of time. It's because he will punish you and make you miserable for 15 minutes, and that's precisely what he did to Nate Marquardt in the UFC 109 co-main event Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, pounding out a unanimous decision victory that earned him a shot at April's middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and challenger Vitor Belfort.

After dominating anointed contender Nate Marquardt at UFC 109 on Feb. 6, Sonnen talked up his donor and picked a fight with someone across the aisle. "I hope Anderson (Silva) wins (at UFC 112) because I think Vitor (Belfort) is a lot tougher fighter," Sonnen said after UFC 109. He was calling him "a bum" and saying he'd really rip into the champ after he beat Nate Marquardt after UFC 109. The rest of us couldn't help but ask if the guy was crazy. That is because as I sat ringside with my fight card in hand, I was sprayed with some blood from the face of Xavier Bell. • KELLER: Tito Ortiz calling out Mark Coleman at UFC 109 is another example of Tito doing anything to stay relevant

    8 Feb 2010 | 10:24 pm
By Wade Keller, MMATorch Supervising Editor Tito Ortiz struck again, adding his dose of has-been show-biz pro-wrestling nonsense to the UFC PPV on Saturday night. He prodded the easily provoked Mark Coleman after the fight, apparently in an attempt to set up his second money grudge fight after Chuck Liddell or just get himself on TV to promote The Ultimate Fighter. Tito's not going to be a title contender anytime soon, even though he's the about age when Randy Couture was starting his MMA career. So the way for him to cash in on what's left in his tank and remain relevant is finding ways to…
  • UFC QUOTABLES: Ed Soares - "Chael Sonnen should fight Demain Maia first to determine who gets the next Title shot"

    Jim Genia
    8 Feb 2010 | 10:24 am
It was a pitiful main event, a train-wreck of a match-up that saw two Hall of Famers clash in what would’ve been blasted as laughable had it occurred in another promotion, but because it was in the Octagon it was hailed as legitimate. UFC 109 saw Randy Couture, still moderately competitive at 46-years old, trounce 45-year-old UFC 10 tournament winner Mark Coleman in a predictably one-sided and ugly affair. If not for Chael Sonnen’s spirited three round war with Nate Marquardt – a virtuoso performance that cemented the former NCAA All-American wrestler’s status as top middleweight…
  • To Be or Not To Be: The Phillipe Nover Question

    Jim Genia
    6 Feb 2010 | 5:27 am
To be or not to be? That is the question that looms above Phillipe Nover and his UFC career, a question that will likely be answered when he enters the cage at UFC 109 to face Rob Emerson. Heralded by Dana White as the next Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva for his dominant performances in the Octagon during the TUF 8 season, the Brooklyn-born registered nurse of Filipino decent seemed to have his future in a tight rear naked choke. In fact, he was the favorite going into the live finale. But fellow TUF finalist Efrain Escudero had an answer for Nover’s heavy hands and solid jiu-jitsu…

As with most – if not all – intense athletic endeavors, the competitive lifespan of a fighter’s career tapers off with time, each white hair and arthritic flair up akin to grains of sand in an hourglass, the accumulation of which is the definitive signal that it’s time to hang up the gloves. Yes, mixed martial arts is a younger man’s sport. So much so, in fact, that when a competitor enters the cage on the far side of 30, he’s considered ancient; at 40, an anomaly. Beyond that, he’s a circus act. And yet here we are, a few days after 47-year-old ex-football great Herschel…

UFC 109 took place last night and was an event I did a few articles on here. I wanted to take the time to eat some crow and give my thoughts on the event. First let me start by saying I was 100% wrong about Chael Sonnen (24-20-1). He dominated Fighters.com fourth-ranked “Great” Nate Marquardt (29-9-2). This is the first time we saw Nate unable to do anything for 14 minutes. He looked a bit lost off his back and other than two guillotine attempts he had nothing to offer in the way of submission offense. Congratulations to Chael for proving me wrong. Coleman was submitted by “The Natural” Randy Couture (18-10) in a rear naked choke at 1:09 of round two.  Though he dotted Couture’s jaw with sporadic punches, backing up his fellow UFC Hall of Famer, Coleman was never really at an advantage in the fight.  Couture hit Coleman more often during exchanges, controlled Coleman in the clinch, and submitted him on the mat.

Randy Couture likes proving people wrong. If anything defines him, it is that. His career has been a series of outstanding upset victories that both defied the odds and took people’s breath away. People said that he was too old and too slow to defeat Chuck Liddell in 2003, but somehow he managed to do it. People said that we was too old and too small to defeat Tim Sylvia in 2007, but somehow he managed to do it. So as he stood victorious for the first time on American soil since 2007 it seemed like ‘The Natural’ had once again confounded those who had written him off. But when you dig…
